Here at HorrorBox, we love an overnight scare experience. There’s a unique intensity to them; knowing that falling asleep in what should be a ‘safe’ space will not mark the end of the horror, and there is no respite until the sun rises. In this sense, there is no other type of scare experience that so closely mirrors a typical horror film. The night in its entirety is fully capitalised on.
So we were thrilled to discover that Scream Camp, a new overnight horror experience, will be running on selected dates in summer 2019. We caught up with Calum Beckett, founder and creative director of Scream Camp, to find out more.
-What can you tell us about Scream Camp?
Scream Camp is a 10 hour overnight horror camping experience where guests will participate in intense games, challenges and tasks as well as being subject to an onslaught of scares within their tents themselves.
-What kind of experience are you hoping to create?
The initial idea and concept behind Scream Camp is to create an event in which everybody over the age of 18 can visit and have a fun, but terrifying night. We aim for guests to leave, wanting to visit again and again. We aim to make guests believe that they are in a real horror movie, as the victim. Imagine… roasting marshmallows whilst listening to horror stories by the camp fire as strange noises close down on you from the darkness of the forest – we want the guests to be laughing one minute and cowering in fear another.
-Do you think this is something that will appeal to newcomers on the scare scene, as well as hardened fans?
So far, Scream Camp has already had a fantastic response online. Our Facebook posts are getting thousands of engagements so I think it is something which is appealing to new comers as well as hardcore horror enthusiasts. Speaking of which, scare fans will be in for a shock, when they see what we have up our sleeves. It truly is something they’ve never seen before. One of the important aspects for us was to envelop an ‘extreme’ full-contact experience within a strong narrative and story led experience.
-We noticed you have a ‘safe tent’ option – what made you decide to include this?
The safe tent option was conceived for guests that want to visit Scream Camp, but may not have the stamina to experience the intensity ALL night. The show is 10-hours long and so, more than likely, the guests will have little chance to sleep.
-What advice would you give the participants?
The only advice I’d give is, just to go with the show. Whatever happens and whatever uncomfortable situations you’re plunged into, remember that it’s only a show… or is it? You will be scared, you will scream and you may even cry (a little), but by the end of the night, you’ll be laughing along and wanting to visit again!
